Reaching a State of Balance

Hi. My name is Jeremy Speiser and I am a California Licensed Acupuncturist. Some of you may know me from my herbal medicine company, Eastern Essentials. Some of you may know me from coming into my clinic as a patient and being treated by me with acupuncture and herbs. I’m well known for my no nonsense approach to healing, and getting straight to the point. I don’t use fancy gimmicks or silly catch phrases to sell people on products, but I try and be as honest and realistic as possible. The goal is to get the patient better, not to impress them or treat them as simply a customer.

The problem I am consistently confronted with these days, is I see many people who are sick or diseased in some way, who want to devote themselves to healing, but are confused about which method to trust and who’s advice to listen to. We have Dr. Oz telling you everyday something else is wrong with you and you need something else to treat it. We have shelves filled with diet books at any bookstore with contradictory information. One book says don’t eat wheat, another one says eat whole grains and no meat. Some books say eat lots of meat and fat and no grains at all, while another one says eat less protein and more fruits.

Why are people getting fatter or unhealthier, while we are bombarded with more diet, exercise and health information in all directions than ever before? Is it possible we are drowning amongst too much information, most of which is unhelpful, maybe even detrimental, and we are unable to decipher what will really help heal us and what is just being sold to us?

The truth is much more simple than many of these health gurus would like us to believe. After all, they need a show to air and books to sell. The body is always trying to reach its equilibrium and this is called homeostasis. The body wants to heal. It is doing this every second of every day. Healing is not only allowing this to happen, but to enhance the body’s ability to do this. We want to create a state of balance. Not too much in any direction by a balanced overall healing. Health is balance!

Of course when things have gotten a bit out of hand, or there is a bacterial invasion or something that requires modern medical treatment, we should take advantage of it. When necessary, we can take pharmaceuticals,  if we really need them, and take herbs or do acupuncture to create the deep long lasting healing that drugs can’t help with. We need to stop thinking of “Alternative Medicine” and start thinking of it as simply “Medicine”, with its own advantages and its own limitations. The key is understanding when to use herbs and when to use drugs and when to use both. Both conventional and natural medicine can exist side by side., as they do in modern China.
